Since I related that project to my BA Portfolio work, I thought I would bring in more elements from my other paintings. My favorite painting I made this semester included little teacups that looked like flowers with butterfly handles, and since my mold-making assignment included a cake and a glass, I thought it would be interesting to hone in on the weird/creepy childhood tea party theme by making even more fish-babies and fruit, and also making the tea cups and incorporating a goldfish I had sculpted earlier in the semester while thinking of ideas. The fruit, to me, seemed like pieces of innocence, but like the fish-babies in the martini glasses and the cake, also felt like a reiteration of this theme of "consumption" and commodities.                I began my process

Mold Making

What I thought I would do with these little fish things in the end changed several times. I thought I would make them contained or coming out of a goldfish snack box, but then I decided I wanted them to be more ambiguous. I thought including the goldfish snack box would make it seem like these things I had made were inspired by the snack that smiles back, which was not the case. Then I was thinking back to all of the different spaces I have been using to contain this fish/person all semester in other classes, and found some martini glasses. I also was not sure what else to make, and just impulsively began making strawberry molds with no plan. Eventuall

Wood

I knew I wanted a cluster of holes at the center of a rectangular form. I originally wanted there to be multiple layers of wood with circular cutouts to create a sense of depth, but then I began to appreciate what the piece was becoming on its own. I rounded the circles on the front and back of the wood, so it was clear that I wanted the back to be considered as well; when it came time to display the piece, the shadows created and the fact that the viewer could see through to the other side became an important part of the experience.  I began by picking what I thought would be my first layer of my sculpture and drawing out various sizes of circles in a cluster at the center of the wooden piece. I drilled large holes in the center of each so that I could then saw the circle shapes o

Foam and Plaster

Front View Back View Idea Sketching Artist Statement My initial sketches for my foam and plaster sculpture look slightly different than the final product. In the beginning, I thought about having rings wrapping around an organically shaped structure in various places. As I got further into the process, I was not sure how I would accomplish this and still have a smooth sculpture. I also grew to like the idea of stacking the rings on top of each other and then on top of my organic form. I think becoming more familiar with the materials and their textures influenced the shift in my idea for the sculpture, but I am satisfied with the final product.  For the process, I began by drawing the rings, organic shape, and rounded base on foam and then cutting them out and sanding them. I made sure to create rounded edges for all of my pieces in the sanding process because I did not want any harsh edges or lines. I applied two thick layers of plaster to each piece and then sanded them to be as
